Definitions

  1. ___________________Names used instead of just saying a letter. This is used so that misunderstandings are avoided. For instance a 'M' and 'N' can sound the same, but using this instead of saying the letters will make sure you are understood.
  2. ___________________This is what it is called when the answering pennant is raised to the top of the flag pole. It means that the message has been understood.
  3. ___________________Flags that are used for signaling on a boat.
  4. ___________________When people have trouble communicating because they speak different languages. Pennants can help to bridge this difficulty.
  5. ___________________ A method boats can use to communicate with each other.
  6. ___________________The position that an answering pennant is put in when the signal flags have been seen, but not read yet.
  7. ___________________A system of abbreviations, where each flag has a meaning besides the letter it represents. This enables sailors to quickly get across important messages without worrying about language barriers.
  8. ___________________A flag used to mean "I have seen your massage."
  9. ___________________There are three of these flags that mean to repeat a letter that has already been used. These flags are needed because only one copy of each flag is kept on board a boat at the same time.
