After reading the handout about Eric Abraham, answer the questions below.
Use your best handwriting.
1. Since you know that Mr. Abraham's birthday is on April 22nd, and you know he will be 100 years old this year, 1998, what year was he born?___1898_____
2. List three things that were different in Eric's childhood from your own because of a lack of electricity. They had oil lamps for light, no refrigeration, and no electronic entertainment, instead they used the gramophone.
3. What did they do for live entertainment when Mr. Abraham was growing up? Barn Dance
4. How far were they willing to travel for this entertainment? 10 to 15 miles
5. Why was this such a long way to go? They had to travel by buckboard wagon, buggy, or horse back.
6. How were perishable foods obtained in 1908? Delivered by the milk man, the green grocer, or the meat man.
7. Why was this a particularly unsanitary method of attaining your meat? The meat was hung in an open wagon and pulled by horses down dirt streets. it had dust, manure, and other impurities on it.
8. What was done to prepare the meat? Carefully washed and cooked the meat for hours.
9. How many years did WWI last? 4
10. How much of the war did Mr. Abraham fight in? All of it.
11. Why did he not have to enlist in WWII? He served on the price commission which was a protected occupation in WWII.
12. In one paragraph describe one game that you have played that did not require electricity or pre-manufactured goods (such as boards or action figures). State why this game could have been played 100 years ago.
This may include games like Make believe or Tag. They should describe it and then state things like: it could have been played 100 years ago because it does not require anything except my imagination and my own physical ability.
Bonus: Pick one of the following items: oil lamp, cooler, or gramophone. Describe the item, in your own words, and then state how it was used.
Oil Lamp - A wick that burns because it is stuck in oil is incased in glass. A person with small hands must clean the glass weekly and trim the wick. It was used to provide light.
Cooler - It was a box frame with a cloth hung over the top of it. A slow trickle of water was then used to wet the cloth. The breeze would then evaporate the water and cool the box. This was used to keep foods safe from ants, flies and spoilage.
Gramophone - A pattern of holes in a record shaped cylinder, in a hand crank machine, played music. It was the only sorce of ready entertainment a hundred years ago.
